nasa-scientist-proposes-bored-aliens-may-have-stopped-contacting-us

A new theory proposed by a NASA scientist suggests that extraterrestrial civilizations may have ceased attempts to communicate with humanity due to a lack of interest. Dr. Robin Corbet, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, introduces the concept of “radical mundanity” in his recent paper, titled “A Less Terrifying Universe? Mundanity as an Explanation for the Fermi Paradox.”

Dr. Corbet argues that while extraterrestrial civilizations (ETCs) likely exist, they may not possess the advanced technology or motivation necessary to reach out to Earth. He posits that the energy and timescales required for interstellar communication could span millions or even billions of years, making such efforts impractical.

According to Dr. Corbet, “If there are a reasonable number of ETCs in the galaxy, Earth is not likely to be a very interesting place to visit.” His remarks challenge the widely discussed Fermi Paradox, which questions why humanity has not yet found evidence of intelligent life despite the universe’s vastness. Using the Drake Equation as a basis, many theorists suggest that numerous civilizations should exist within reach of communication.

Dr. Corbet emphasizes that it is more plausible that none of these civilizations have reached the level of “super-science” required for effective communication or colonization of other planets. He compared the technological advancement of these civilizations to that of smartphones, stating, “The idea is that they’re more advanced, but not much more advanced. It’s like having an iPhone 42 rather than an iPhone 17.”

While the prospect of discovering an extraterrestrial civilization remains, Dr. Corbet believes that such a discovery might not fulfill expectations. He remarks that there is a “reasonable chance” humanity could one day detect signals from an alien civilization, but the outcome might “leave us slightly disappointed.”

This perspective opens up new discussions on humanity’s place in the universe and the nature of potential extraterrestrial life. As research continues, the debate surrounding the existence and nature of these civilizations remains a captivating topic for scientists and enthusiasts alike.
