OpenAI has launched two new artificial intelligence models, the gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, which are available for free and can be customized by users. This strategic shift aims to compete with similar offerings from both American and Chinese companies. The announcement was made on October 3, 2023, coinciding with growing calls for transparency regarding AI technologies.

The move to release these “open-weight language models” reflects OpenAI’s commitment to its founding mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. “Going back to when we started in 2015, OpenAI’s mission is to ensure AGI that benefits all of humanity,” stated OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer, Sam Altman.

New Models Designed for Accessibility and Performance

The gpt-oss models are designed for various AI applications, such as internet searching and code execution, while being efficient enough to run on local computer systems. OpenAI asserts that these text-only models deliver robust performance at a lower cost compared to previous iterations.

“This is the first time that we’re releasing an open-weight model in language in a long time, and it’s really incredible,” remarked Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, during a media briefing. The release aims to encourage innovation and research, with Altman expressing hope that it will lead to the development of new products.

OpenAI is collaborating with partners such as French telecommunications giant Orange and cloud-based data platform Snowflake to explore practical applications of these models.

Addressing Concerns and Criticism

The introduction of these models comes as OpenAI faces scrutiny regarding its transparency and operational structure. Earlier in the year, Altman acknowledged that the company had strayed from its original mission by not being open about its technological advancements. In response to criticism, including concerns from AI safety activists and co-founder Elon Musk, OpenAI has reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a nonprofit organization.

The debate over its structural direction intensified when investors sought to convert OpenAI into a for-profit entity, a proposal met with backlash. In a revised plan, OpenAI will allow its profit-generating arm to operate, but it will remain under the governance of a nonprofit board.

As OpenAI continues to navigate the complex landscape of AI development, these newly released models signify its intention to lead in an increasingly competitive market while adhering to its foundational principles. The commitment to open-weight models represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing evolution of AI technology, with the potential to shape future research and applications.
