Prof. Guo Yike, Provost and Chair Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). This honor recognizes his significant contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division. The CAE is China’s highest academic institution in engineering sciences and technology, and being elected as a foreign member represents one of the highest accolades in the field.

In response to his election, Prof. Guo expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am deeply honored to have been elected a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and sincerely thank those who recognized my work. Significant Contributions to AI and Engineering

The news was met with enthusiasm from HKUST President Nancy IP, who congratulated Prof. Guo on this prestigious honor. She noted, “His contributions to artificial intelligence, coupled with his leadership in developing Hong Kong’s first generative AI large language model, have brought tremendous momentum to HKUST and the city’s innovation and technology ecosystem.” This election is seen as a tribute to his exceptional scientific leadership, which is expected to inspire more talent to engage in cutting-edge innovation.

Prof. Guo has a distinguished background in computer science, having spent 33 years at Imperial College London before joining HKUST in 2020. His research focuses on data mining for large-scale scientific applications, encompassing various fields such as biology, healthcare, finance, and security. Since his appointment as Provost in December 2022, he has been instrumental in integrating advanced technologies into university curricula and attracting global talent.

HKUST’s commitment to excellence in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is reflected in its global rankings. The discipline is currently positioned 17th worldwide and 1st in China, showcasing the university’s pioneering role in AI innovation. In the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, HKUST achieved 28th place globally in Computer Science and 33rd in Engineering. The university also secured 29th place in the QS World University Rankings for Electrical & Electronic Engineering and 43rd in Engineering & Technology.
