Thousands of Victorians had the opportunity to explore the West Gate Tunnel during a special event held at Yarraville Gardens on Sunday. Participants could choose from a paid eight-kilometre charity run or a free 2.5-kilometre walk. The walking route led visitors along the banks of the Maribyrnong River, onto the unopened freeway, and through the tunnel entrance, before looping back to the starting point. The event featured a vibrant neon light display, numerous photo opportunities, and live music performed by the Newport Bush Orchestra, creating an engaging atmosphere for attendees.
One local resident, Fikadu, who works as a taxi driver, expressed his enthusiasm for the new roadway. “It’s a good help for us – especially with the traffic jams,” he stated, highlighting the significant time savings expected when commuting to destinations such as the airport. He added, “Most of my time is driving on the road … it’s great for all drivers. And especially for all of the western people living here.”
