49ers-place-kittle-on-injured-reserve-waive-kicker-moody

The San Francisco 49ers have placed tight end George Kittle on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This decision comes ahead of a demanding schedule, with four games set in the next 23 days, including matchups against teams such as New Orleans and Jacksonville.

Kittle sustained the injury during the first half of the 49ers’ recent victory over the Seattle Seahawks. He will miss crucial games, including a Thursday Night Football clash against the Los Angeles Rams. Under league rules, the earliest Kittle could return would be for the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 12, 2024, allowing him some additional time to recover.

In addition to Kittle’s injury, the 49ers are making a change at kicker by waiving Jake Moody. This decision follows Moody’s recent struggles, including a missed 27-yard field goal and a blocked 36-yard attempt against Seattle. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that a move with Moody had been anticipated, stating that options were being explored, including potential workouts and practice squad adjustments.

With Kittle sidelined, the 49ers will rely on tight ends Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges, and may utilize fullback Kyle Juszczyk in a tight end role. Juszczyk has been participating in tight end meetings throughout training camp and the preseason, thereby preparing for this possibility. The team also has Brayden Willis on the practice squad, who could be elevated if needed.

Kittle exited the game against Seattle with 10:06 remaining in the second quarter after attempting a deep route. He had recorded four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown prior to his injury, making his absence significant for the 49ers’ offense.

Moody, selected in the third round of the 2023 draft, was initially seen as a long-term replacement for veteran kicker Robbie Gould. His tenure in San Francisco has been inconsistent, with an overall field goal conversion rate of 70.6%, ranking 35th in the NFL. Despite a promising start to the 2024 season, where he made 13 of 14 attempts, a high right ankle sprain hindered his performance upon his return in Week 10.

In Super Bowl LVIII, Moody gained attention for briefly holding the record for the longest field goal in the event’s history at 55 yards, although he also faced challenges, including a blocked extra point during the game.

The 49ers will navigate these changes as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming weeks, with Kittle’s and Moody’s absences presenting both challenges and opportunities for the team.
