49ers-secure-right-tackle-mckivitz-with-45-million-extension

The San Francisco 49ers have solidified their offensive line by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with right tackle Colton McKivitz worth $45 million. The deal, which includes $27 million guaranteed, ensures that McKivitz will remain with the team through the end of the 2028 season. The agreement was confirmed by McKivitz’s agents, Doug Hendrickson and CJ LaBoy, to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on the morning of September 11, 2023.

Discussions about the contract extension gained momentum last week when McKivitz expressed his desire to stay with the 49ers. He indicated that both he and the team were eager to reach an agreement but noted uncertainty about the timing. “I think it’s pretty open right now,” McKivitz stated. “Nothing crazy is going on but both sides have said that we want to be here, which I do. I love playing here. I love being a part of this team, and they’ve reciprocated that.”

The timing of the deal marks a significant increase for McKivitz, who previously signed a one-year, $7 million extension in March 2024. Observers noted that he might have commanded a higher salary on the open market, particularly after former backup Jaylon Moore secured a $15 million annual contract with the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year. Ultimately, McKivitz prioritized his loyalty to the team that drafted him in 2020 and supported his development as a player.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had previously voiced his support for McKivitz, emphasizing the importance of retaining both him and receiver Jauan Jennings during a press conference. “Everyone in this building wants Jauan back in the long term,” Shanahan said. “We want Colton McKivitz back. Those are two guys that we really hope to keep here. But they’re both going into their contract year, and nothing’s ever final, but we’ll see how it plays out.”

Since becoming a full-time starter in 2023, McKivitz has proven to be a reliable presence on the offensive line. He has not missed any of a possible 35 starts, making him one of the most dependable players on the roster despite the challenges presented by roster turnover and injuries.

This extension not only secures McKivitz’s future with the 49ers but also reinforces the team’s commitment to maintaining a strong offensive line as they aim for success in the upcoming seasons. With this deal, the 49ers continue to build a foundation that prioritizes both talent and stability.
