The stage is set for an unprecedented showdown as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner face off in the men’s singles final of the US Open on September 10, 2023. This matchup marks the third consecutive Grand Slam final between the two players, a historic event in the open era of tennis.
Earlier this year, Alcaraz triumphed over Sinner in a grueling final at the French Open, which lasted nearly five-and-a-half hours. However, Sinner claimed his revenge at Wimbledon, where he defeated Alcaraz to secure the title. Their most recent meeting occurred at the Cincinnati Open in August, but that match ended prematurely when Sinner had to retire due to illness, granting Alcaraz the victory.
Both players have demonstrated exceptional skill at Flushing Meadows. Alcaraz secured his place in the final by defeating Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, in straight sets. Meanwhile, Sinner advanced after overcoming Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who managed to take one set off the Italian but ultimately fell short.
Sinner’s achievement in reaching this final makes him one of only eight men to compete in all four Grand Slam finals within a single season, and at just 24 years of age, he is the youngest to accomplish this feat in the open era. His current hard-court winning streak at major tournaments stands at 27 matches, matching the record set by Djokovic. Only Roger Federer’s 40-match streak from 2005 to 2008 remains ahead.
Reflecting on his remarkable season, Sinner stated, “The Grand Slams are the most important tournaments and finding myself again in the final, with an amazing crowd, it does not get any better.” He described the upcoming match as “a very special occasion,” emphasizing the significance of their rivalry and the atmosphere at the US Open.
Sinner noted, “I feel our rivalry started here, playing an amazing match,” referring to their intense five-set quarter-final at the US Open in 2022, where Alcaraz claimed victory. “We’ve played quite a lot this year, so we know each other very well. In any case, it has been an amazing tournament, an amazing feeling to play in front of you [the crowd]. I’m looking forward to doing it again.”
In the head-to-head record, Alcaraz leads Sinner 9-5, with the Spaniard also holding one more Grand Slam title than his Italian counterpart. Alcaraz expressed his excitement about reaching the final, saying, “It’s a great feeling, once again to be in the final of the US Open, it feels amazing.”
The outcome of this final will not only determine the US Open champion but will also decide the new world No 1. With both players at the peak of their games, fans can expect an electrifying match that caps off a historic trilogy of Grand Slam finals.
The final will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from 18:00 local time. Viewers can also stream the match through the Sky Sports app, offering access to an expanded range of live sporting events.
