English golfer Andrew “Beef” Johnston has spent the past ten months in Perth, Australia, making significant strides in his recovery from thumb surgery. The former world No. 74, known for his engaging personality, underwent the procedure in March 2023 to repair two torn ligaments in his thumb. After years of battling injuries, Johnston is optimistic about returning to competitive golf.
From Diagnosis to Recovery in Perth
Johnston’s journey to recovery began after a misdiagnosis in Europe in November 2022. Realizing the severity of his injury, he sought a second opinion in Singapore, where he learned about the torn ligaments. “I didn’t know where I was going to do the surgery, but since we were near Perth, I wanted to take my wife and little one to Rottnest and hang out for a week,” Johnston recalled.
While in Perth, he serendipitously discovered Dr. David Dyer, a surgeon who had been recommended by a local family he met at a playground. This encounter led to his surgery just a week later. “Everything was going so well in the first couple of months, so I thought why am I going to change this,” Johnston said, reflecting on his decision to stay in Perth for his rehabilitation.
A New Chapter in Perth
Living in Perth has not only aided Johnston’s recovery but has also allowed him to embrace the local lifestyle. He expressed a sense of belonging, stating, “While we were here, we just really fell in love with Perth and don’t really want to go anywhere else.” His family shares this sentiment, with his child asking when they will return to the city.
As he prepares to return to competitive play, Johnston is focusing on participating in the Australian PGA and Australian Open at the end of November and December. Currently ranked No. 775, he is eager to regain his form. “This is the best it’s been since the injury,” he stated. “I need to get rounds under my belt and keep playing and finding a rhythm.”
This week, Johnston is set to compete in the Webex Player Series event at Royal Fremantle Golf Club, hosted by Australian golf stars Minjee Lee and Min Woo Lee. His enthusiasm is palpable as he aims to make the most of his time in Perth while advancing his career.
Johnston’s journey highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. His experience in Perth serves as a reminder that sometimes, taking a step back can lead to significant forward momentum in both personal and professional life.
