Australia’s cricketers are poised for a significant financial boost following their commanding 4-1 series victory over England in the Ashes. This triumph not only solidifies their dominance in the format but also secures a total bonus of approximately $1.6 million to be shared among the players, including prominent figures like Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith.

The series concluded with Australia firmly positioned as the top team in the world rankings, a status that is critical as it affects the players’ financial agreements with Cricket Australia (CA). The bonuses are part of a deal established between the players and CA in 2023, which rewards players based on their team’s performance in international matches.

Under-the-Radar Heroes Rewarded

Among those benefitting from this lucrative outcome is Michael Neser, who joined the squad midway through the series. Neser showcased his talent by taking 15 wickets and scoring 75 runs across three matches, prompting an upgrade to his contract. This upgrade necessitates CA to cover the difference between his existing contract with Queensland and the national squad’s base pay. Similarly, Jake Weatherald will also see his contract enhanced under the same terms.

Both players entered the series without CA contracts, but by participating in three Test matches and fulfilling additional criteria, they have secured their positions among the national team players. They will each receive a top-up to reach the minimum CA retainer for male players, which is around $350,000.

Impact of the Ashes Series

Australia’s performance in the Ashes has fortified their standing in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings, where they hold a comfortable lead over second-place South Africa and third-place England. The ICC rankings consider results over the last four years, weighting recent performances more heavily. As of April 1, 2024, Australia’s ranking will be confirmed, and as no further Test matches are scheduled before that date, the players are assured of their current positions.

The recent success has also led several Australian Test stars back into domestic competitions, such as the Big Bash League. Veteran batter Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne played for Brisbane Heat in a match against Sydney Thunder, just two days after concluding the Ashes series. Meanwhile, stand-in captain Steve Smith faced disruption due to rain in his return to the Sydney Sixers, but the team anticipates welcoming back Mitchell Starc, who was named player of the series, later in the tournament.

With the Ashes victory not only boosting national pride but also providing financial rewards, Australia’s cricketers are set for an exciting period ahead, both on and off the field.
