Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will not participate in the preseason for the first time in his career. Head Coach Sean McDermott announced during a press conference on Thursday that Allen will sit out the third and final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 26, 2023. Allen also did not play in the previous two preseason games.
McDermott emphasized the importance of protecting Allen as the team prepares for the upcoming season. He stated, “You’ve got the reigning MVP, and I feel that he’s shown to this point that he’s in a good spot.” The decision to rest Allen aligns with the team’s strategy to ensure he is ready for the regular season, which kicks off next month.
Despite not participating in preseason games, Allen has been a full participant in training camp, missing only one team period. He also took part in a joint practice with the Chicago Bears last week, showcasing his preparedness for the challenges ahead.
As he enters his eighth season in the NFL, Allen is coming off his first MVP season, during which he recorded the fewest turnovers (eight) and sacks (14) of his career. His performance last season solidified his status as a key player for the Bills and a major contender in the league.
The Bills are still evaluating options for other first-team players ahead of the game against Tampa Bay, but the decision to rest Allen appears to be a calculated move to maintain his health and performance. With the regular season looming, the Bills are focused on ensuring that their star quarterback is fully prepared to lead the team as they seek success in the upcoming campaign.
