Melbourne Storm faces a challenging situation ahead of their upcoming match against the Manly Sea Eagles on July 7, 2023. Star player Cameron Munster has not yet returned to training following the unexpected passing of his father, Steven Munster, while teammate Ryan Papenhuyzen continues to struggle with a calf injury.

Munster Takes Time to Grieve

Officials from Melbourne Storm have confirmed that Munster will be given as much time as he needs to process his loss. His father passed away just days before Queensland’s victory in the State of Origin decider on June 28, 2023. Papenhuyzen spoke about the emotional toll this situation has taken on Munster, emphasizing the support the club has provided during this difficult time.

“The club’s been really good to give him some time off and obviously the emotional rollercoaster of Origin let alone the passing of Steve,” Papenhuyzen stated.

While Munster was named in the squad for the Sea Eagles match, a final decision on his participation is expected later this week. Papenhuyzen noted that Munster has been in “good spirits” and has maintained communication with his teammates despite his absence from the club.

Papenhuyzen’s Recovery Journey

As for Ryan Papenhuyzen, he has missed the last two games due to a calf injury. He is set to test the injury this week but remains doubtful about his readiness for the match against Manly. He acknowledged that while the injury is less severe than some he has faced in prior seasons, it is still crucial to approach his recovery with caution.

Papenhuyzen expressed his frustration with the uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline. “It feels like it’s improving. It’s more just I can’t really tell unless I’m running,” he explained. He emphasized the importance of being smart about his return to ensure he is fully fit for the finals.

“The little ones are probably more annoying in a sense because you can see the finish line right there and you want to push,” he added. “But I guess you have a bigger goal at the end of the year.”

As the Storm prepares for this crucial match, all eyes will be on Munster’s emotional state and Papenhuyzen’s injury progress. The team remains hopeful for a strong performance despite the absence of these key players.
