The status of Sergiño Dest as a starter for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) appears increasingly precarious. In the wake of the October international break, a wave of injuries has sidelined key players, including Christian Pulisic of AC Milan and Malik Tillman of Bayer Leverkusen. As the team gears up for a pivotal World Cup on home soil, scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, the competition for starting positions intensifies.

The weekend following the international window was marked by a notable absence of USMNT players on the field. Many who emerged from the break without injuries found themselves relegated to substitute roles, limiting their opportunities to impress club coaches. The UEFA Champions League did provide some playing time for American players, yet not all performances were successful.

Among those under scrutiny is Dest, who showcases undeniable talent as a fullback for PSV Eindhoven. However, his recent actions have raised concerns. After a promising outing that included strong offensive runs in a 2-1 victory against Go Ahead Eagles, Dest’s late arrival for a Champions League match against Napoli led to his removal from the starting lineup by manager Peter Bosz. Although he was substituted into the match later, this incident has sparked questions about his discipline and reliability.

Dest’s absence from the USMNT roster during the October window due to injury allowed Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT manager, to experiment with alternatives in the right-back position. Players like Tim Weah and Alex Freeman have gained valuable experience, potentially diminishing Dest’s once-secure place in the national lineup. With Weah also being considered for a wingback role, Dest must improve his focus and performance to reclaim his position.

The competition extends beyond Dest. Folarin Balogun, currently with AS Monaco, has experienced a mixed week. After scoring a late equalizer against Angers, he was given a starting position against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. Despite several chances, he failed to find the net in a goalless draw, leaving him in a battle for playing time against teammates like Ansu Fati and George Ilenikhena.

In the midfield, Cristian Roldan of the Seattle Sounders has emerged as a compelling candidate as the MLS Cup playoffs approach. His recent performances have captured the attention of Pochettino, transforming him from an overlooked player to a key figure in the national setup. Roldan’s impactful displays in the Club World Cup and Leagues Cup have demonstrated his capability to compete at the highest levels, making him someone to watch as the playoffs unfold.

Injuries have had a significant impact on the USMNT, particularly in the attacking midfield positions. The absence of Pulisic due to a hamstring injury has been well-documented, but the situation has worsened with Alejandro Zendejas now sidelined after aggravating a knee injury. As a result, Pochettino has had to consider other options, including Roldan and Diego Luna, who have stepped up in the wake of these setbacks.

Weston McKennie is another player whose role is under scrutiny. Traditionally a central midfielder, he has had to adjust to a more attacking position in Pochettino’s tactical setup. His ability to adapt and contribute creatively will be vital as the team prepares for the World Cup. McKennie has shown promise in recent matches, linking effectively with Balogun and proving himself capable of playing in advanced roles.

On the defensive front, the situation remains concerning for Antonee Robinson, who has yet to return from knee surgery. His continued absence opens the door for others, including Max Arfsten, who has performed admirably in Robinson’s stead. While Arfsten’s emergence is a positive for the team, it underscores the uncertainty surrounding Robinson’s fitness and availability for the upcoming matches.

As the countdown to the World Cup continues, the USMNT’s roster composition remains fluid. With only 232 days until the squad is finalized, players must seize every opportunity to solidify their places. As injuries and competition reshape the lineup, the pressure mounts for those vying for a coveted spot on the national team.
