Kyneton owner-trainer Glen Gascoyne celebrated his first victory at Hanging Rock Racecourse on January 1, 2026, as his horse Mahogwise Honour won the Midland Express Maiden Plate. After two previous disappointments at the venue, Gascoyne’s fortunes changed dramatically with this unexpected win.

In prior attempts, Gascoyne faced challenges that included a meeting cancellation due to kangaroos on the track and the abandonment of another event caused by an undetected hole in the home straight. Last Thursday, however, Mahogwise Honour delivered a stunning performance, coming from behind to clinch a victory in the 1800m race.

Mahogwise Honour, a four-year-old gelding, had not shown promise in earlier races, finishing unplaced at 100-1 odds during a 1450m event in Tatura on December 14, 2025. Gascoyne’s decision to step up the distance was a calculated risk, which paid off as the horse demonstrated remarkable stamina and determination. Under the guidance of jockey Chelsea Taylor, Mahogwise Honour surged ahead to win by a length, finishing ahead of Dali’s Picasso, with the odds-on favourite, Phantom’s Choice, fading to third place.

Gascoyne, who is also known for his talent in lawn bowling, has a history of working with both trotters and gallopers. Currently, he has two horses in training and expressed hope that Mahogwise Honour can maintain his winning form in future races. Gascoyne’s success at Hanging Rock is particularly notable; he was the only trainer from the district to achieve a victory at the event, marking a significant milestone in his racing career.

As the racing community celebrates this win, Gascoyne’s aspirations continue to grow. He dreams of one day breeding a top-quality galloper, a goal that reflects his deep passion for the sport. Mahogwise Honour’s triumph at the Midland Express Maiden Plate not only signifies a personal victory for Gascoyne but also adds a new chapter to his journey in horse racing.
