Geelong Football Club has secured the services of defender Lawson Humphries through a contract extension that will keep him at Kardinia Park until at least the end of the 2028 season. Originally contracted for the upcoming season, Humphries signed an additional two-year deal, further solidifying his place within the team.
Executive General Manager of Football Andrew Mackie expressed the club’s satisfaction with the extension. “Lawson has become an integral part of our football club in such a short period of time, and we are pleased to retain him until at least the end of 2028,” Mackie stated. He praised Humphries for his impressive on-field skills and positive influence off the field.
Humphries’ Development and Impact
Humphries joined Geelong in 2023, selected with pick 63 in the national draft. His journey in the AFL began with a solid performance in the VFL, where he showcased his talent during the first half of the 2024 season. This performance earned him his AFL debut in round 16 of that season. Over the final stretch of the 2024 campaign, Humphries played in the last 11 games, including two finals, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in Geelong’s defensive lineup.
In 2025, Humphries continued to build on his success, missing only one match throughout the season. His contributions were significant, as he collected an average of 16.2 disposals per game and was recognized as one of Geelong’s standout players during the grand final, despite the team’s loss to the Brisbane Lions. Furthermore, he led the club in total rebound 50s over the season while also contributing offensively with four goals.
As the team prepares for the upcoming 2026 AFL season, Humphries and his teammates have returned to pre-season training, eager to build on their previous accomplishments. The extension of his contract reflects the high regard in which he is held by the club and emphasizes Geelong’s commitment to retaining top talent as they aim for future success.
