Hull KR suffered a disappointing 28-12 defeat against Wakefield at the packed DIY Kitchens Stadium, jeopardizing their efforts to secure the top spot in the Betfred Super League. The loss marked one of Rovers’ poorest performances of the season, as they trailed 26-0 by halftime. Meanwhile, Wakefield’s victory bolstered their chances of reaching the play-offs in their first season back in the top flight.

Wakefield, energized by the return of Max Jowitt, who scored a try and contributed 12 points through successful kicks, showcased a commanding performance. The hosts now have a pivotal match against bottom-placed Salford on March 15, 2024, where a win would guarantee a top-six finish.

The match commenced in a disheartening fashion for Hull KR. Jake Trueman opened the scoring for Wakefield just five minutes in, capitalizing on a fortunate bounce to slide under the posts. Hull KR struggled to find their rhythm, repeatedly giving away penalties, including one that allowed Jowitt to extend the lead with a penalty kick after the visitors were caught offside.

Wakefield’s dominance became evident as they doubled their lead at the 20-minute mark. A seamless pass from Mason Lino exploited Hull KR’s static defense, further widening the gap. Hull KR’s lack of response was palpable, with even Mikey Lewis suffering a mishap that allowed Jowitt to glide through for Wakefield’s third try.

Despite a valiant effort from Tom Davies, who halted another potential score from Jowitt, Wakefield finished the first half strong. Jowitt assisted Cam Scott, who secured their fourth try, leading to a staggering halftime score of 26-0.

After the break, Hull KR showed some improvement. They finally got on the board when Arthur Mourgue scored shortly after the restart, followed by a successful conversion. Even so, Wakefield responded effectively, with Jowitt adding another penalty to extend their lead to 28-6.

Hull KR managed a late consolation try through Oliver Gildart, but the damage was done, leaving their quest for the League Leaders’ Shield in jeopardy. To secure their position at the top, they must win their final regular-season match against Warrington next week at Craven Park.

In a contrasting match, Hull FC kept their own play-off hopes alive with an emphatic 34-2 victory over Warrington at the MKM Stadium. The win brings Hull FC to just one point behind Wakefield, who benefited from their win against Hull KR.

Hull FC’s performance was characterized by early aggression, with tries from Lewis Martin, Denive Balmforth, Aidan Sezer, and Harvey Barron giving them a commanding lead by halftime. The first three tries were scored during a period when Warrington’s Lachlan Fitzgibbon was in the sin bin.

As the match progressed, Hull FC maintained their momentum. Jordan Lane and Hardaker both added to the scoreline, with Hardaker converting all five tries. With one round of games remaining, Hull FC is poised for an exciting finish as they chase a spot in the play-offs.

Both Hull KR and Hull FC now face critical matches ahead, with fortunes hanging in the balance as the Super League season draws to a close.
