Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has returned to practice in a limited capacity as the team opens a 21-day window for his potential comeback. Burrow has been sidelined since Week 2 due to surgery on a turf toe injury on his left foot. The announcement on Monday marks a significant step forward for the player, who has been on injured reserve since September 16.

During this 21-day period, Burrow can participate in limited practice without affecting the Bengals’ 53-player active roster. Although the team is cautiously optimistic, head coach Zac Taylor confirmed on Monday that Burrow will not play in the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Taylor emphasized the need for ongoing evaluation, stating, “This is just Day 1.”

Burrow’s injury occurred in the first half of a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. Since then, the Bengals have relied on both Jake Browning and Joe Flacco as starting quarterbacks. Currently, the Bengals hold a record of 3-6 and are coming off a bye week, hoping to improve their standing in the league.

In addition to Burrow’s return, the Bengals face further challenges with injuries. Defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who recorded 17.5 sacks in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, is doubtful for Sunday’s matchup due to a hip injury sustained on October 26 against the New York Jets. Hendrickson previously missed the second half of the Week 6 game against the Green Bay Packers because of a similar issue and was absent in Week 7 against the Steelers. This season, he has recorded four sacks and a forced fumble.

As the Bengals navigate these challenges, the team’s management and fans will closely monitor Burrow’s recovery and Hendrickson’s status leading into the critical stage of the season. The Bengals aim to maximize their performance as they look toward future games, particularly against division rivals like the Steelers.
