Leicester City’s remarkable victory in the Premier League during the 2015-16 season is still celebrated today, particularly as the club approaches the tenth anniversary of their stunning triumph. The Foxes, who were considered 5,000-1 outsiders to win the title that year, topped the league with a commanding ten-point lead after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous season. The title was officially secured when Tottenham Hotspur drew against Chelsea, paving the way for a trophy presentation at the King Power Stadium following a home win against Everton.
Memories from a Historic Season
Marc Albrighton, who played in all 38 Premier League matches that season, reflects fondly on that unforgettable achievement. “People say it’s a dream, but I don’t even think it was for me,” he shared in an interview. Albrighton, who had always aspired to play for Aston Villa and compete in the Premier League, described winning the title and lifting the trophy as an experience he never anticipated.
After claiming the trophy, Albrighton and his teammates made it a point to celebrate their victory by bringing the trophy with them wherever they went. “Even after I first got to lift it, for probably the next year when we were the holders, it came everywhere with us,” he recalled. The players’ enthusiasm for the trophy was palpable. Albrighton often requested security to bring it out for photographs, even during summer pre-season trips.
One memorable occasion occurred on a flight to Los Angeles, where they coincidentally shared the plane with football legend David Beckham. “Everybody got the trophy out and was having pictures with Beckham with the trophy!” Albrighton recounted, highlighting the sheer joy and camaraderie the players felt during those moments.
A Reunion on the Horizon?
As Leicester City prepares to commemorate the tenth anniversary of their title win, plans for a reunion among former teammates are under discussion. Although it has yet to be confirmed whether an official gathering will take place in May, Albrighton mentioned that the squad remains connected through a WhatsApp group titled “Reunion 2026.”
“We do keep in contact,” he stated, emphasizing the bond that helped propel them through that historic season. Former captain Wes Morgan recently initiated a conversation in the group about a tournament scheduled for next summer in Shanghai, which could serve as an opportunity for several players to reunite.
“The plans are pretty quiet at the minute for my liking, I’ll be honest with you!” Albrighton added. “Hopefully they pick up in the next couple of months and we can plan something big for our 10-year anniversary.”
The sense of togetherness that defined Leicester City’s 2015-16 campaign continues to resonate among the players, a testament to the impact of their extraordinary achievement in football history. As the anniversary approaches, fans and players alike can look forward to celebrating a remarkable journey that began with an improbable dream.
