Inter Miami celebrated its historic victory in the MLS Cup with a reception at the White House on March 15, 2024. The event marked the club’s first championship win, and team captain Lionel Messi presented President Donald Trump with a signature Miami pink soccer ball. Accompanying Messi were co-owner Jorge Mas and head coach Javier Mascherano, who also gifted the president a Miami jersey and a watch.

During the ceremony in the East Room, Trump expressed his admiration for Messi, stating, “It’s my distinct privilege to say what no American president has ever had the chance to say before: Welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi.” He shared a personal anecdote about his son, who is a fan of Messi and soccer in general.

This visit was significant for Messi, who joined Inter Miami in July 2023. It followed a similar event in November 2023, when soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo was honored at the White House. Trump emphasized the importance of recognizing talented individuals in sports, noting the achievement of the Inter Miami squad.

Historic Reception for Inter Miami

The White House event aligns with the long-standing tradition of champions being welcomed by the president. The first MLS team to receive this honor was D.C. United in 1998 after their Cup triumph. Following them, the LA Galaxy made multiple visits after winning championships in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

Messi’s attendance at this reception also comes after he was invited by the Joe Biden administration to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2025. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, but he expressed his appreciation for the honor and hope for a future meeting.

Inter Miami’s win on December 6, 2025, against the Vancouver Whitecaps with a score of 3-1 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale capped off a remarkable rise for the club. Since its inception in 2020, Inter Miami has gained significant attention not only for its on-field performance but also for its star-studded roster, which includes former soccer great David Beckham as a co-owner.

Mas reflected on the team’s journey, stating, “This championship was very, very well deserved, greatly played, and you’re looking at one of the best teams on the face of the earth standing behind us. And this all became possible because we dared to dream.”

This celebration at the White House underscores the growing popularity of soccer in the United States and the impact of international stars like Messi on the sport’s landscape.
