A commanding performance from Ash Riddell and a standout debut by Irish player Blaithin Bogue propelled North Melbourne to a decisive 30-point victory over Geelong in the opening round of the AFLW on March 16, 2024. The match, held at GMHBA Stadium, saw the defending premiers fend off a late challenge from the Cats, ultimately winning with a score of 8.3 (51) to 3.3 (21).

In a contest that began with heavy rain, Geelong managed to narrow the gap to just six points as the final quarter approached. However, Bogue, making her first appearance in the league, ignited North Melbourne’s offense with a remarkable series of plays. The 25-year-old scored her first goal with a swift 20-meter soccer kick and later assisted in another goal, establishing an 18-point lead for her team.

North Melbourne’s victory was solidified when Bogue, showcasing her skills, marked the ball in the goal square before confidently converting from close range. Her contributions were pivotal in the final quarter, where the Kangaroos outscored Geelong five goals to one.

Riddell, known for her midfield prowess, was also a key player, accumulating a game-high 28 disposals and securing eight clearances. Her leadership on the field was instrumental in maintaining North’s momentum throughout the match.

“It was great. The first three quarters were tough, but we knew we just had to keep fighting until the end,” Bogue said in an interview with Fox Sports. She reflected on her scoring opportunities, noting, “I honestly was just in the right place at the right time for the goals.”

Geelong faced challenges of their own during the match. Ruck player Kate Darby was sidelined early due to a right calf injury, and Jacqueline Parry suffered a right ankle injury later on. Additionally, Rebecca Webster may face disciplinary action following a high bump on North Melbourne’s Ruby Tripodi.

The Kangaroos had a strong start, dominating the clearances 8-3 and inside-50 entries 11-3 in the first term. Despite this, Geelong’s efficiency in attack enabled them to equalize at two goals each by the first break. North’s forward Kate Shierlaw broke the deadlock late in the first quarter, scoring her first goal with a strong mark and a 50-meter penalty.

As the match progressed, Geelong found some rhythm in the third term, yet only managed to register two behinds despite leading the inside-50 count 10-3. This failure to capitalize on their chances allowed North Melbourne to maintain their lead heading into the decisive final quarter.

With Bogue’s impactful performance and Riddell’s midfield mastery, North Melbourne begins their season on a high note, showcasing their determination to defend their title in the AFLW.
