Nottinghamshire clinched the County Championship title for the seventh time, thanks to a remarkable performance from their players, including significant contributions from Australian cricketer, O’Neill. The 24-year-old was pivotal during his brief 28-day stint at Trent Bridge, where he played a crucial role in the team’s unbeaten start to the season.

O’Neill’s impact was felt in multiple matches, where he took 21 wickets, the highest number recorded by any bowler in the country during that period. His average stood at 17.90, with an impressive economy rate of 2.67. Notably, he achieved two five-wicket hauls and scored half-centuries against both Essex and Warwickshire, despite rain disrupting what could have been another standout performance at Edgbaston.

On the final day of the championship, Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed led from the front, scoring a commanding 122 against Warwickshire at their home ground in Nottingham. His century was instrumental in ensuring that Nottinghamshire surpassed the required 300 runs to secure vital bonus points, distancing them from defending champions Surrey.

The team’s total of 374 runs was complemented by contributions from Joe Clarke (52), Kyle Verreynne (83), and Liam Patterson-White (70). Verreynne, in particular, showcased his talent with a stylish cover drive for four, followed by a six that sealed the victory in emphatic fashion.

Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, praised the team’s achievement against a strong Surrey side. He stated, “Anyone who comes ahead of Surrey has played some pretty good cricket because they are really good, and it’s a great tribute to our players.”

As the season progresses, O’Neill, who was awarded the 2024-25 Sheffield Shield player of the season, is eager to make a mark on the international stage. With the Ashes series approaching, selectors have taken notice of his talent and included him in the A tour. He recently participated in an unofficial Test against India A in Lucknow, where he bowled for figures of 1-66 on a batting-friendly surface.

Nottinghamshire’s victory not only highlights their strong performance throughout the season but also underscores the significant contributions from players like O’Neill, who have made their mark in the county circuit. As they celebrate this title, the team looks forward to building on their success in future competitions.
