The Carolina Panthers have re-signed wide receiver Hunter Renfrow on a one-year deal, just days after releasing him. This move comes as the team places Jalen Coker on injured reserve due to a quad injury sustained during practice on March 14, 2024. Coker is expected to miss the first four to six games of the upcoming season.
Renfrow, a 2021 Pro Bowl selection, previously struggled with injuries and health issues, missing the entire 2024 season after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders. His performance had declined significantly during the 2023 season, partly due to complications from ulcerative colitis. Renfrow faced severe symptoms, including a persistent fever, which left him questioning his football future.
“I felt so bad those two years, and I felt like I let my teammates down so much,” Renfrow reflected as he prepared for his return with the Panthers. “Because I had expectations. I just signed a new contract [in 2022]. I had a new coaching staff that I was going to be perfect for. And I was just a dud.”
The Panthers maintained communication with Renfrow following his release, initially hoping to add him to their practice squad as he recovered from a hamstring injury. Coach Dave Canales noted that Renfrow had not yet returned to his training camp form when the decision to release him was made. Nevertheless, both Canales and general manager Dan Morgan expressed their desire for Renfrow to be part of the organization.
Coker’s injury accelerated the Panthers’ decision to bring Renfrow back into the fold. The team had high hopes for Coker, who had impressed with his agility and speed. Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik praised Coker’s “freaky lateral quickness” and noted his powerful strides, indicating that he had the potential to become a key player.
With Renfrow’s return, the Panthers look to bolster their receiving corps following the trade of veteran Adam Thielen to the Minnesota Vikings a few days prior. Renfrow’s experience and skills are expected to play a pivotal role as the Panthers prepare for the upcoming season.
Renfrow’s journey highlights the resilience of athletes facing personal and professional challenges. His determination to return to form and contribute to the Panthers will be closely watched as the season approaches. The Panthers are counting on his talent to fill the gap left by Coker and to reinvigorate their offense as they aim for a successful campaign.
