The New England Patriots have finalized a two-year contract with restricted free agent quarterback Tommy DeVito, valued at a maximum of $7.4 million. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal includes $2 million guaranteed. DeVito served as the team’s third-string quarterback during the 2025 season, positioned behind starter Drake Maye and veteran backup Joshua Dobbs.
As the Patriots prepare for the 2026 season, they maintain the same quarterback depth chart. Dobbs, 31, is under contract for one more season, with a base salary of $3.2 million and a salary cap charge of $4.75 million. DeVito, who is now 27 years old, joined the Patriots in late August 2025 after being claimed off waivers from the New York Giants.
This offseason, as a restricted free agent, the Patriots had the option to tender DeVito an offer at various levels, including $3.52 million for the right of first refusal, $5.7 million at the second-round level, or $8 million at the first-round level. Ultimately, both parties agreed to the two-year contract, allowing DeVito to forgo the opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027. The base salary for this new deal is expected to be $4.4 million.
Although DeVito did not participate in any games during the past season, he expressed his enthusiasm for learning under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. In January 2026, head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged DeVito’s development, stating, “I think that’s a tough proposition to have, coming in at the end of training camp and trying to get acclimated offensively. So to his credit, he’s done a really nice job.” Vrabel emphasized that DeVito dedicated additional time each week to work with younger receivers, particularly those on the practice squad.
The Patriots’ commitment to DeVito signals confidence in his potential as they look to solidify their quarterback lineup in the upcoming season. With a strong foundation in place, the team aims to enhance its performance as it heads into the 2026 campaign.
