pll-power-rankings-teams-battle-for-playoff-spots-in-week-11

The final weekend of the regular season in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) is upon us, with all eight teams still mathematically alive in the playoff race. Three teams—New York, Denver, and Carolina—have already secured their playoff spots, while Utah and Maryland face elimination. With the stakes higher than ever, this weekend promises thrilling “elimination lacrosse” as teams vie for a coveted place in the postseason.

Power Rankings Overview

In this week’s power rankings, the Denver Outlaws and New York Atlas stand out as the top teams in the league. Both have clinched their divisional titles and are poised for postseason success. As the league prepares for the playoffs, the question remains: Who will emerge as the third-best team?

1. Denver Outlaws
Current record: 7-3
Previous ranking: 1
The Outlaws faced a mixed weekend, losing to Carolina but bouncing back with a significant win over New York. Their transition offense, led by rookie goalie Logan McNaney, continues to be a game-changer. Long-pole defender Jake Piseno scored a pivotal two-pointer during the victory over the Atlas. The team has benefitted from the performance of Jared Bernhardt, who scored against New York, and Brennan O’Neill, who leads the league with 23 goals. After starting the season 0-2, the Outlaws have turned their fortunes around and now enjoy a bye week before the PLL semifinals on September 1 at Subaru Park in Philadelphia.

2. New York Atlas
Current record: 6-3
Previous ranking: 2
The Atlas experienced another overtime setback, making them 0-5 in such situations. Despite losing to Denver, Connor Shellenberger has emerged as a standout player, leading the league with 39 points and a shooting percentage of 48%. Concerns linger about the team’s endurance during crucial moments, as they have faltered in the fourth quarter on multiple occasions this season. They hope to regain momentum against Philadelphia this Saturday.

3. Boston Cannons
Current record: 4-4
Previous ranking: 4
Ending their losing streak, the Cannons secured a 13-10 victory over Philadelphia. Known for their physical play, the Cannons showcased the talents of Asher Nolting, who had an impressive game. Midfielder Matt Campbell leads the league in midfield points and assists, contributing to the team’s resurgence. Boston will face the California Redwoods and Maryland this weekend, with their championship contention on the line.

4. Carolina Chaos
Current record: 5-4
Previous ranking: 3
The Chaos pulled off a stunning comeback against Denver, winning 12-11 after overcoming a six-goal deficit. Rookie Owen Hiltz has been a revelation, leading the league with an average of 4.3 points per game. Meanwhile, goalie Blaze Riorden remains a top performer during high-pressure situations. The team will need to monitor the health of defender Jack Rowlett, who suffered an injury in the Denver game. This weekend, they will face the Archers.

5. Philadelphia Waterdogs
Current record: 4-5
Previous ranking: 5
The Waterdogs struggled against Boston, losing 13-10 and failing to mount a serious challenge. Rookie CJ Kirst shone with five goals in his natural position, bringing hope to the team’s fans. However, concerns remain regarding goaltending and midfield performance. The Waterdogs face a crucial matchup against New York this Saturday, where a win may secure their playoff spot.

6. California Redwoods
Current record: 4-5
Previous ranking: 7
The Redwoods staged an impressive comeback victory against Maryland, winning 14-13 after shutting out their opponents in the fourth quarter. Dylan Molloy scored five goals, while rookie Chris Kavanagh contributed significantly with seven points. The Redwoods will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to take on Boston this weekend.

7. Maryland Whipsnakes
Current record: 3-6
Previous ranking: 6
The Whipsnakes faced a heartbreaking loss to California, severely hampering their playoff aspirations. With a fourth-quarter collapse, they lost 14-13 and now find themselves in a precarious position heading into the final weekend. To maintain any hope of making the playoffs, Maryland must win against Boston while hoping for favorable outcomes in other matches.

8. Utah Archers
Current record: 3-6
Previous ranking: 8
The Archers are in dire straits as they prepare to face Carolina. If the playoffs began today, both Utah and Maryland would miss the cut. The team, which won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, has struggled this summer, particularly in the faceoff department. To qualify for the playoffs, the Archers need a win against Carolina and a series of favorable results.

As the regular season concludes, all eyes will be on Boston this weekend. The outcomes will determine which teams advance to the playoffs and who makes an early exit. The excitement and intensity of elimination lacrosse promise to deliver unforgettable moments for fans and players alike.
