Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua has significantly advanced his game thanks to mentorship from veterans Cooper Kupp and Davante Adams. Nacua, who was drafted in the fifth round in 2023, first encountered Kupp during organized team activities (OTAs) while Kupp participated remotely due to family commitments. The young receiver quickly recognized the potential for growth through Kupp’s guidance, describing the experience as akin to having “another coach” in the room.
After Kupp’s departure from the Rams, Nacua turned to Adams for mentorship. Adams’ extensive experience provided Nacua with a fresh perspective, particularly during OTAs when Nacua requested that Adams lead drills. This desire for knowledge stemmed not only from respect but from Nacua’s earnest commitment to enhancing his skills.
Learning from the Best
Throughout his rookie season, Nacua absorbed insights from Kupp, following the advice of Rams receivers coach Eric Yarber to “hold on to Cooper’s coattail.” This strategy proved effective, culminating in Nacua setting a rookie record with 105 catches for 1,486 yards. Following the Rams’ decision to release Kupp and sign Adams, Nacua adeptly navigated this transition, utilizing lessons learned from his previous mentor while actively engaging with Adams to refine his technique.

The offseason prior to the 2024 season marked a turning point for Nacua. Kupp invited him to participate in personal training sessions, where they worked together three times a week. Nacua reflected on the intensity of these workouts, humorously recalling his struggle to keep up. This rigorous training regimen prompted him to overhaul his nutrition, moving away from fast food towards a healthier diet.
Despite facing challenges in the 2024 season due to a knee injury that limited him to 11 games, Nacua still managed to impress with 79 catches for 990 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams concluded their season with a playoff appearance, where Nacua and Kupp both contributed significantly in the divisional round against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Rams’ decision to sign Adams brought a new dynamic to the team. Coach Sean McVay described the acquisition as a strategic move to pair Adams with the emerging talent of Nacua, suggesting that the combination could yield significant benefits for the team’s offensive capabilities. “It was another great player where you felt like you could acquire two No. 1s,” McVay commented.
