Caroline Springs Lakers have secured a significant addition to their roster with the signing of former Melbourne Vixen star Rahni Samason for the upcoming 2025 Western Netball League season. This move represents one of the most notable signings in the league’s history, enhancing the club’s competitive edge.
Samason, who has also played in the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand, is widely recognized for her exceptional shooting skills. The Lakers believe her experience and poise under pressure will be invaluable assets for the team. Nadine Oborne, the Lakers’ netball coordinator, expressed excitement about the signing, stating, “We’ve gone big this year. It’s very exciting. We want to build that pathway between juniors and seniors.”
Building Pathways and Team Strength
The Lakers aim to create a strong connection between their junior and senior programs, allowing younger players to look up to seasoned professionals like Samason. Oborne noted that Samason’s decision to join the club was influenced by family connections and her positive experience during a recent clinic at the Lakers. “She didn’t hesitate,” Oborne remarked.
In addition to Samason, the Lakers have also signed Charlize Bellette, who recently debuted in the SN reserves for the Melbourne Mavericks and has been selected for the under-19 Victorian squad. Oborne highlighted the importance of having Samason’s experience in the goal circle, stating, “To play with someone in the circle with Rahni’s experience will help her game.”
Last season, the Lakers fielded five teams, with all but one making it to the finals. The Division 1 team claimed the minor premiership but fell short of winning the grand final. Oborne emphasized that the club’s focus remains on developing talent through its pathways, hoping to achieve success in future premierships. “We have so much talent coming through; we will only get stronger,” she said.
Preparing for the Future
As pre-season training is underway, the Lakers are assessing whether to enter five or six teams for the upcoming season. There is also consideration for establishing a men’s team in a new division, which reflects the club’s ambition to evolve. “It’s a new chapter for Lakers netball,” Oborne commented, noting that around 15 players have expressed interest in joining the new men’s side.
An exhibition match featuring the Lakers’ Division 1 and 2 teams against the newly forming men’s team provided valuable insights into different playing styles. Oborne remarked on the dynamic nature of the game, highlighting the aerial and fast-paced aspects of men’s netball.
With the addition of Samason and the continued development of young talent, the Lakers are poised for an exciting season ahead in the Western Netball League.
