Fresh from an impressive start to the racing season, trainer Rod Northam is set to field four horses at the upcoming meeting in Tamworth on Monday. Northam, based in Scone, has achieved a remarkable strike rate, bringing home 11 individual winners from his last 34 runners. This success translates to a near 33 percent win rate over a span of just 26 days, marking a strong beginning for the 2025-26 season.
His recent performances could have been even more noteworthy, as the stable experienced three close second-placings at Dubbo early last month, followed by back-to-back placings on Cup day at Narromine. Last Tuesday, Northam celebrated victories at Scone when promising mare Smart Buy won a Class 1 race, and five-year-old Release Point narrowly triumphed in a competitive BM 66 event.
Northam’s Ambitious Line-Up at Tamworth
Northam is heading to Tamworth with good memories, particularly after securing a maiden win just 11 days ago with his new four-year-old, Bullion Hunter. The trainer will not have to wait long to continue his successful run; improving mare Sebilla is set to contest the opening BM 66 handicap over 2100 meters. This race marks a significant distance increase for Sebilla, who previously won at home over a mile.
The stable also has high hopes for Great Point, another progressive mare aiming to return to winning form in a competitive BM 66 handicap over 1400 meters. A daughter of Bull Point, Great Point had a strong winter campaign, progressing through consecutive Saturday Highways before taking a spell. She made a promising return with a fast-finishing effort behind Peninsula in a BM 66 at Scone on August 19, 2025, and has continued to train well, having already won at Tamworth in a BM 58 event last June.
The third entry from Northam is the intriguing four-year-old Fan Harder, who resumes after a year-long absence. Racing from the inside draw in a BM 58 handicap over 1200 meters, Fan Harder won on debut at Muswellbrook, clocking an impressive 33.26 seconds for the final 600 meters of a 1000-meter race despite some pre-race nerves.
Finally, Northam will look to secure another win with mare Speck, who is well-positioned in the BM 82 handicap over 1000 meters. A consistent performer, Speck has shown resilience throughout her career, aiming for her fifth victory in just her 14th start. Having faced heavy ground in her recent races, she is expected to thrive on firmer conditions.
This line-up highlights Northam’s skill as a trainer and his commitment to maintaining an impressive winning streak. The Tamworth meeting promises to be an exciting event for both the trainer and racing enthusiasts alike. For full race replays and form details, visit Racing NSW at racingnsw.com.au.
