One of Sydney’s prominent racing stables is poised to make a statement as they prepare to resume the imported gelding, Seven’s, at the Canterbury meeting on October 25, 2023. This lightly raced five-year-old, bred in the UK, is looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance earlier this year.
Seven’s has not raced since mid-March, when he struggled on firm ground in a Benchmark 78 event at Wyong. That race marked the end of a challenging seven-week campaign for the gelding since his arrival from Europe. Initially earmarked for potential success following consecutive weight-for-age victories in Europe over distances around 2000 meters, Seven’s faced difficulties adapting to the tighter Australian tracks. He was notably a short-priced favorite on two occasions at Warwick Farm and on the Central Coast but fell short both times.
Before his return to competition, Seven’s underwent a spell which included two solid trials up to 1200 meters. In his latest trial, he settled off the pace and displayed a strong finish while laying in. This preparation has set him up for a first-up assignment in a Benchmark 72 race over 1550 meters at Canterbury.
Favorable Conditions for Seven’s
The return to racing comes at an opportune moment, as Seven’s will be competing on rain-affected ground, which has proven beneficial for him in the past. Both of his victories last year were achieved on very soft surfaces. His pedigree includes being sired by the high-class British stallion Bated Breath and out of a mare by Galileo, suggesting that he may excel as distances increase.
In terms of race strategy, Seven’s has drawn a position that should allow him to find a handy trail back in the pack. Given the tricky starting point on this circuit, maintaining a clear path will be crucial for a successful outcome.
The competition includes Bat Out Of Hell, trained by Bjorn Baker, who is seeking his fifth career victory after finishing strongly in his last two outings. As the race approaches, anticipation builds around how Seven’s will perform, particularly in conditions that could favor his running style.
With the right circumstances and a strong performance, Seven’s has the potential to mark his return to racing with a significant victory at Canterbury.
