Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford sustained a sprained index finger on his throwing hand during the team’s recent playoff victory over the Carolina Panthers. Despite the injury, Stafford is expected to play this Sunday against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Sean McVay.

The injury occurred late in the first half of the game on January 13, 2024, when Stafford attempted a pass to wide receiver Puka Nacua. He described the moment as his finger bending backward after hitting a helmet. Following the game, McVay shared his confidence in Stafford‘s resilience, stating, “He’s as tough as it gets… He had a sprain on the index finger, but he was able to push through it.”

X-rays on Stafford‘s finger taken the following day returned negative, alleviating concerns about more serious damage. McVay indicated that he does not anticipate Stafford needing any protective gear for the injury during the upcoming match.

Team Updates Ahead of Playoff Game

In addition to Stafford‘s situation, McVay provided updates on other players. Right guard Kevin Dotson is “making great progress” with his ankle injury sustained in Week 16, and the coach expressed optimism about Dotson‘s potential return this week.

Rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson, who has missed the last two games due to a hamstring issue, is also expected to be available for Sunday’s game.

Conversely, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon will miss the remainder of the postseason after re-injuring his shoulder against the Panthers. Witherspoon had previously broken his scapula in Week 2 and spent a significant portion of the season on injured reserve.

As the Rams prepare for this crucial playoff matchup, the performance of Stafford and the return of key players will be pivotal in their quest to advance in the postseason.
