The Gold Coast Suns remain optimistic about securing their first finals appearance in the Australian Football League (AFL) despite a disappointing 35-point loss to the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants last week. Star midfielder Touk Miller characterized the defeat as a minor setback rather than a significant obstacle, emphasizing that the team is firmly on track for the finals.

The Suns had the opportunity to solidify their position with a victory at home but fell short against a GWS team that played without key forwards Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer. This result leaves Gold Coast with a record of 14 wins and 7 losses, diminishing their chances for a coveted top-four finish in the league. To secure a finals berth, the Suns need at least one victory from their upcoming matches against Port Adelaide on March 15, 2024, and Essendon the following week.

Miller expressed confidence that the lessons from the GWS loss will benefit the team in the crucial weeks ahead. “It’s disappointing, but Dimma (coach Damien Hardwick) talks about it a bit—those losses are gifts, and we can learn from those,” Miller stated. He added that facing challenges now is preferable to encountering them closer to finals.

Some analysts speculate the Suns may have faltered under pressure with their first finals opportunity within reach. However, Miller dismissed this notion, stating, “We’ve done a really good job this year of being where our feet are.” He acknowledged that the finals discussion will continue until the team is actively competing, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their next opponent, Port Adelaide.

The Power, currently in 14th place with a record of 8 wins and 14 losses, are grappling with numerous injuries. On paper, they appear to be vulnerable. Nevertheless, the match will carry significant emotional weight as it marks the final games for Ken Hinkley, the long-serving coach, and Travis Boak, a club legend. Miller recognizes the challenge ahead.

“Who doesn’t love Friday night football? For us, it’s a fantastic opportunity,” said Miller. He anticipates a vibrant atmosphere with around 50,000 fans expected to attend, creating a hostile environment for the Suns. “It’s going to be as good as football gets. For us, we know the implications—if we win, we’re in.”

The upcoming clash against Port Adelaide not only represents a critical moment for the Suns’ finals ambitions but also serves as a tribute to two significant figures in the club’s history. The Suns will be looking to harness the lessons from their previous loss and capitalize on the opportunity to secure their place in the finals.
