Following a troubling incident during a recent match, Swindon Town has launched an investigation into what manager Ian Holloway described as “absolutely horrific” behavior by a fan. The situation unfolded after Walsall secured a late winner, leading to a 2-1 defeat for Swindon in their League Two clash on October 7, 2023, at Bescot Stadium.
A supporter from the away section was observed throwing an object at Walsall goalkeeper Myles Roberts. In addition to this incident, Swindon Town reported awareness of “a number of serious incidents” during the match, which included the use of pyrotechnics, objects being thrown, and abuse directed at stewards, staff, players, and match officials. There was also damage reported to property within the stadium.
The club expressed its commitment to addressing these issues, stating, “This behavior has absolutely no place at our football club or in the wider game.” The statement emphasized that individuals identified as participating in such actions would face severe consequences, potentially including banning orders and legal action.
In a direct address to the responsible fan on Swindon’s YouTube channel, Holloway did not hold back his disdain. “I’m disgusted by whoever that person was. Whoever you are, you’re not a Swindon fan. I’m not having you, and I hope you get caught. That is absolutely horrific. How dare you put our club in the situation you’ve just done … we don’t want you in football,” he stated firmly.
Earlier, Holloway expressed his sentiments further during an interview with BBC Radio Wiltshire, asserting, “That’s not right; that’s not football. You think you’re upset and all of this? Just shut your face and get out of the game. It’s absolutely disgusting.” This passionate response highlights the ongoing concern regarding fan behavior in sports.
