CINCINNATI — Wide receiver Tee Higgins is set to make his return for the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend after clearing concussion protocol. Higgins confirmed his availability for the crucial road game against the Buffalo Bills on Friday. The player has been sidelined since suffering a concussion during the Bengals’ Week 12 defeat to the New England Patriots on November 23, 2023.
Higgins expressed enthusiasm about rejoining his teammates, especially Ja’Marr Chase and quarterback Joe Burrow. “It’s been a minute, man,” he said. “I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s going to be great.” The wide receiver acknowledged the seriousness of his injury, recalling how he was injured while attempting to catch a deep pass, resulting in a hard fall that left him on the field for several minutes before being carted to the locker room.
Progression Through Protocol
The recovery process was marked by a gradual increase in activity throughout the week. Higgins began as a limited participant during Wednesday’s practice before fully engaging in Thursday’s session. He shared insights into the protocol, stating, “It was just getting through concussion protocol, seeing how I’m feeling with working out, running routes and things like that. It’s basically all just on me, see how I’m feeling and then passing those tests as well.”
After a productive practice on Friday at the team’s indoor facility, Higgins reported feeling great and ready to contribute. His return comes at a critical juncture for the Bengals, who currently hold a record of 4-8 and are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive. They are two games behind the Pittsburgh Steelers for the division lead, making every game essential as they aim to win out for a chance at the AFC North title.
Impact of the Trio on the Field
Sunday’s matchup will also mark the first time this season that Higgins, Chase, and Burrow will play together since Week 2. Burrow’s turf toe injury sidelined him for nine games, and his return coincided with a victory over the Baltimore Ravens, which ended a four-game losing streak for Cincinnati. The Bengals have heavily invested in this trio, with Chase signing a record-breaking four-year deal worth $161 million and Higgins securing a three-year contract valued at $115 million earlier this year.
In 11 games this season, Higgins has recorded 40 receptions for 575 yards and seven touchdowns, showcasing his importance to the team’s offensive strategy. As Cincinnati readies itself for the Bills, Higgins’s return is anticipated to provide a significant boost, both mentally and on the field, as they strive to keep their postseason aspirations alive.
