Omaha native Terence “Bud” Crawford, the newly crowned super middleweight boxing champion, was issued a traffic ticket for reckless driving shortly after a celebratory parade in his honor on March 10, 2024. The incident occurred in the early hours following the parade, which attracted thousands of supporters celebrating Crawford’s recent achievement.
Traffic Stop Leads to Investigation
According to a statement released by Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, an internal affairs investigation has been initiated regarding the circumstances surrounding the traffic stop. The statement confirmed that officials are aware of a video circulating on social media that appears to document the incident involving Crawford.
A spokesperson for the Omaha police indicated that the video was recorded by a passenger in Crawford’s vehicle. The police have not released their own footage of the stop. Reports indicate that officers pulled over a vehicle for reckless driving just before 1:30 a.m. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. As a precaution, they ordered all four occupants out of the car at gunpoint.
The driver was later identified as Crawford, who received a citation for reckless driving. A passenger, who was part of Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm. All individuals in the vehicle are reportedly legally permitted to carry firearms, according to the police statement. In response to Crawford’s request, a police supervisor and lieutenant arrived at the scene.
Crawford’s Recent Achievements
Crawford, who celebrated his 38th birthday on the same day as the incident, has been in the spotlight for his recent success in boxing. He achieved a historic victory over Canelo Alvarez in his last match, securing his status as the first male boxer in the four-belt era to become the undisputed champion in three weight classes. His professional record stands at an impressive 42-0 with 31 KOs.
The community of Nebraska has been honoring Crawford for his accomplishments, with festivities lasting for two weeks following his unanimous decision victory. Just the day before the parade, he led the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team onto the field, wearing a jersey emblazoned with “168,” denoting his title in the 168-pound weight class.
As the investigation into the traffic stop proceeds, the boxing community and fans continue to rally behind Crawford, celebrating his achievements both inside and outside the ring.
