Three players with connections to Melbourne’s north-west achieved their dreams of joining the Australian Football League (AFL) after being selected on the second night of the draft. Finn Davis, a standout defender for the Western Jets, was picked by Greater Western Sydney at selection 51. His performance throughout the season, particularly after returning from early injuries, caught the attention of scouts and coaches alike.

Davis finished as the runner-up in the Jets’ best and fairest award, showcasing his development over the season. Averaging nearly 28 disposals and six marks per game, he earned a reputation as one of the Coates Talent League’s most reliable medium defenders. Western Jets coach Christian Stagliano praised Davis, noting, “It was exciting for Finn to be a train-on for the metro squad and worked his way into the main squad, which was super.”

Giants head of talent Adrian Caruso highlighted Davis’s composure and creativity, saying, “What we like most about Finn was his ability to get a job done when asked of him, but also show the creativity and ball use when used as a set-up player.” He joins a promising group of young defenders at the Giants, including James Leake, Joe Fonti, and Harry Oliver.

In another exciting development, Hussein El Achkar of the Calder Cannons was selected by Essendon at pick 53. Marking a significant moment for the club, the Bombers chose to match a bid from Richmond to ensure El Achkar remained with them. A player from the Next Generation Academy, he is celebrated for his dynamic playing style and scoring ability.

During his time with the Calder Cannons, El Achkar scored 47 goals in 26 games, including an impressive six-goal performance against Sandringham. His contributions were also evident at the representative level, where he scored three goals for Vic Metro against the Allies. In his VFL debut with Essendon, he energized his team by scoring three goals shortly after half-time.

Lastly, former Western Jets captain Billy Cootee was another notable selection, taken at pick 42 by Sydney. Cootee’s selection surprised many, considering his recent move to play with Norwood in South Australia after captaining Essendon’s VFL side. His strong work ethic and understanding of the game make him a valuable addition to the Swans.

Cootee had a consistent season in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), culminating in a fifth-place finish for the prestigious Magarey Medal. His versatility as a high forward and ability to play through the midfield will likely contribute to Sydney’s strategic depth.

With the inclusion of these three talented athletes, the AFL continues to showcase emerging stars with local ties, reflecting the depth of talent in Melbourne’s football community. As they embark on their professional careers, fans and clubs alike await their impact on the field.
