verstappen-addresses-horner-s-departure-assures-team-commitment

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 world champion, has confirmed that the recent dismissal of Christian Horner from his roles as team principal and chief executive at Red Bull Racing will not affect his future with the team. Horner’s exit, which took place shortly after the British Grand Prix earlier in July, came as a surprise to many, given his two-decade tenure leading the team.

Speaking ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, where Laurent Mekies will take charge as Horner’s successor, Verstappen noted that the decision was ultimately made by the team’s shareholders. “At the end of the day, management and the shareholders decided that they wanted a change,” he stated. “They run the team, and I’m the driver. Whatever they decide, it’s fully in their right.”

Verstappen reflected on Horner’s significant contribution to Red Bull, acknowledging the successful years under his leadership. He remarked, “We’ve had a lot of great results. Naturally, there are also years where it’s not going that well, and I think the last one and a half years have not gone how we would have liked.” He emphasized the need for the team to move forward and adapt to new directions.

The speculation surrounding Verstappen’s involvement in Horner’s departure gained traction, particularly due to a strained relationship between Horner and Verstappen’s father, Jos. Verstappen played down any connection, stating, “I think people can have a difference in opinion here and there. You need to have differences in opinions.” He expressed optimism about the future, indicating that his focus remains on improving the car’s performance.

Despite being contracted to Red Bull until 2028, Verstappen acknowledged that he has decisions to make about his future. He commented, “Life is unpredictable. In general, I’m very happy where I’m at.” His commitment to the team appears steadfast, as he hopes to continue racing with Red Bull throughout his career.

Verstappen also shared that his relationship with Horner remains strong, referring to him as part of his “second family.” He stated, “Of course I spoke to Christian. I still spoke to him even today.” He expressed gratitude for their shared experiences and the emotional moments they have witnessed together.

As the Belgian Grand Prix approaches, the focus will be on how the team adapts to this leadership change and whether it can regain its competitive edge in the ongoing Formula 1 season. With new regulations and an evolving team dynamic, Verstappen’s performance and commitment will be crucial for Red Bull’s future trajectory.
