The inaugural Twilight Women’s Social Smash cricket event took place at Donnelly Fields in Gunnedah on March 15, 2024, drawing a lively crowd and fostering a spirit of camaraderie among participants. Two matches were held in the evening, featuring the Mooki Maidens competing against the Gwydir Girls, while the Namoi Ninjas took on Peel Power.
In an entertaining display of skill and teamwork, the Mooki Maidens achieved a narrow victory over the Gwydir Girls, scoring 80 runs to their opponents’ 76 runs. Meanwhile, the Namoi Ninjas secured a more decisive win, amassing 114 runs against Peel Power’s 101 runs. Notably, Namoi’s Zoe Fleming emerged as a standout performer, contributing 28 runs and executing two impressive run-outs with direct hits.
Focus on Enjoyment and Community
Despite the competitive edge, the primary goal of the event was enjoyment rather than strict competition. Players batted in pairs, with each duo facing three overs before rotating. The format included a unique twist where teams faced a deduction of five runs for each wicket lost, maintaining a light-hearted atmosphere throughout the night.
Participants ranged from seasoned local cricketers to those who had not played in years, with some enjoying their first experience outside casual backyard matches. Indoor cricket representative player Leslee Finnerty adapted quickly to the outdoor setting, managing to clear the boundary with a powerful hit.
The event also highlighted family connections, as many mothers played alongside their daughters. The Gwydir Girls featured a family lineup, including Kate Knight and her daughters, Heidi Knight and Sally Keeler, along with niece Kirra Natty and granddaughters Mackenzie and Charlette Keeler.
Looking Ahead
The success of the first round sets a promising tone for future events, with round two scheduled to take place at the same venue next Friday night. Participants and spectators alike are eager to return, ensuring that the Twilight Women’s Social Smash cricket series continues to thrive in Gunnedah.
This community-focused initiative not only promotes women’s cricket but also fosters a sense of belonging and support among players, making it a significant addition to the local sporting calendar.
