Dyson has introduced its first desktop air purifier, the HushJet Purifier Compact, which features a design inspired by jet engines. This innovative appliance aims to provide efficient air purification in a more compact form suitable for smaller spaces, although it still retains a substantial footprint.
The HushJet Purifier Compact employs a unique star-shaped nozzle that diverges from the traditional design of larger Dyson models, which often utilize loops or cones. This new approach enhances air compression and draws in surrounding air more effectively, creating a powerful jet of clean air. The design’s inspiration is drawn from both jet engines and hair dryer concentrator nozzles, reflecting a blend of advanced engineering and practical usability.
Sophie Harold, a Dyson engineer, explained that the star nozzle’s design minimizes turbulence. “By having the bending edges, it’s still encouraging air from the surrounding region to join in with the fast jet,” she stated during a visit to the Dyson campus. This design aims to maintain efficiency while fitting within a compact shape suitable for desktop use.
While the new purifier is touted as compact, it still measures approximately 23 cm (9.1 inches) in diameter, making it larger than some consumers might expect for a desktop appliance. It is designed to be positioned on floors or desks, yet its dimensions may not seamlessly integrate into every workspace.
Despite its size, the HushJet offers a significant advantage in terms of noise levels. During testing in an anechoic chamber, the device operated quietly, even on its lowest setting. Harold elaborated that the design reduces chaotic airflow, allowing for a quieter experience, which is crucial for environments where noise can be distracting.
An additional feature of the HushJet is its use of an electrostatic HEPA filter, which is designed to be more energy-efficient and has an impressive lifespan of up to five years. This advancement reduces the ongoing costs associated with air purification, as users will require fewer replacements over time. The fully sealed system ensures that particles collected by the filter remain trapped inside, enhancing the unit’s effectiveness.
Consumers interested in the HushJet Purifier Compact will need to wait for its official launch, which is scheduled for early 2026 in the UK. Pricing details have yet to be announced, and confirmation of release dates for the US and Australia is still pending.
