The highly anticipated 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been officially revealed, marking a significant evolution for the luxury sedan after its predecessor, the W223-series, debuted in 2020. According to Mercedes-Benz, this latest iteration represents the most comprehensive mid-cycle update in the model’s history, with over 50 percent of its components—approximately 2,700—being newly developed, updated, or refined. This upgrade aims to enhance its competitive edge against rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Porsche Panamera. The new S-Class is set to arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Among the standout features of the updated S-Class are an optionally illuminated three-pointed star emblem on the bonnet, a 20 percent larger illuminated grille, and new twin-star Digital Light headlights utilizing micro-LED technology. These enhancements signify the brand’s commitment to innovation, previewing a next-generation lighting signature.

Sales trends show the S-Class has faced challenges in recent years, with only 80 units sold in Australia in 2025, falling short of the 82 units sold by the Panamera. The flagship sedan’s local popularity has declined significantly since 2000, when the W220 model attracted 660 buyers. This shift is largely attributed to changing consumer preferences toward luxury SUVs, with models like the Mercedes-Benz GLS and its BMW X7 competitor seeing 685 and 1,125 units sold, respectively.

Despite these trends, Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson Monika Paikert emphasized the S-Class’s enduring significance. “While in general customer preferences may shift towards SUVs, we are seeing sustained demand for the S-Class, with sales in Australia increasing in 2025 compared to the previous year,” she noted. Paikert underscored that the S-Class remains a core expression of the brand, despite its sales figures being a fraction of what they once were.

The exterior design of the updated S-Class preserves its stately elegance, contrasting with the more avant-garde aesthetics of competitors. The larger illuminated grille, adorned with three-dimensional chrome stars, enhances its nighttime visibility. New rear tail-lights featuring chrome-framed signature stars further reinforce the model’s identity, while an integrated light projector in the side sill casts “Mercedes-Benz” lettering onto the ground, adding a touch of exclusivity.

Mercedes-Benz claims the new Digital Light system, equipped with micro-LED technology, expands the high-resolution illumination field of the headlights by approximately 40 percent, improving visibility while reducing energy consumption. The dynamic Ultra Range high-beam system now swivels for optimal coverage and can reach up to 600 metres, roughly the length of six soccer fields.

The S-Class also debuts new 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels created with high-pressure casting technology. These wheels feature sharper contours and a striking 50-cross-spoke design, finished in Tremolit Metallic High Sheen.

Australian specifications for the S-Class will be announced closer to its launch, but it is expected to include the S450 4Matic, which will boast 280 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque from a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine. The long-wheelbase S580L 4Matic will deliver 393 kW and 750 Nm from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8, with both engines paired with Mercedes-Benz’s 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Known for its luxurious ride quality, the S-Class continues to feature standard Airmatic air suspension, along with optional E-Active Body Control for intelligent damping. A rear-axle steering system enhances agility, allowing for rear wheel turns of up to 4.5 degrees or 10 degrees for improved maneuverability.

Safety features remain paramount in the S-Class, which includes an enhanced adaptive restraint system with Pre-Safe Impulse seatbelt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags. A focus on rear-seat comfort emphasizes the model’s luxury status. Buyers can choose between the standard and long-wheelbase variants, the latter of which transforms the rear into a business lounge equipped with premium amenities.

New options for rear-seat customization include a full-length centre console with concealed storage, USB-C ports, and even refrigerated compartments. Folding tables provide functional space for working or dining on the move, while newly designed MBUX remote controls allow easy access to vehicle functions and entertainment systems, including video conferencing capabilities via integrated HD cameras.

Advancements in the S-Class extend to its climate comfort features, with new Digital Vent Control functions and an advanced electric filter that removes fine particles from the cabin. Optional illuminated air vents adjust automatically to the selected ventilation scenario, enhancing the overall experience.

The MBUX infotainment system is equipped with the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates various systems into a cohesive ecosystem. The AI-based “Hey Mercedes” Virtual Assistant and enhanced navigation features optimize user interaction.

Mercedes-Benz also introduces the Manufaktur customisation program, offering exclusive paint finishes and luxurious leather packages. The newly launched Manufaktur Made to Measure program allows customers to create a unique vehicle with over 150 paint options and more than 400 interior colour choices.

As the 2026 S-Class prepares for its market introduction, it embodies the evolving standards of luxury and innovation in the automotive industry, reaffirming its status as a flagship model for Mercedes-Benz.
