motorists-to-enjoy-toll-free-travel-on-west-gate-tunnel-in-january

Motorists in Melbourne will have the opportunity to travel toll-free on the new West Gate Tunnel for one weekend in January 2024. This initiative follows an earlier announcement by Premier Jacinta Allan, who introduced free weekend public transport during the summer to celebrate the opening of the Metro Tunnel. In response, toll road operator Transurban has agreed to offer free access to the West Gate Tunnel, which is scheduled to open in December 2023.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Transurban stated, “We’ve been working with the government on ways to say thank you to Melburnian drivers travelling on the West Gate Tunnel, including free weekend travel in January so that people can try the tunnels out over summer.” While the offer applies only to one weekend, it is expected to attract significant interest from inner west motorists who have faced years of disruption due to the construction of the $10 billion tunnel.

Completion of the Skyroad and Cycling Veloway

During a recent visit to the site, Premier Allan was accompanied by Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabriel Williams and Roads, Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne for a test drive along the elevated “skyroad” section of the tunnel. This section connects the entry and exit points at Yarraville to the Wurundjeri Way extension in Docklands.

“You’ve met skyrail, now meet skyroad,” said Allan after driving along the six-lane, 1.5-kilometre road, which sits 13 metres above the old Footscray Road. She emphasized that the new elevated Footscray Road will reduce travel time, allowing residents to spend more time at home.

In addition to the road, a 2.5-kilometre cycling veloway located beneath the skyroad is nearing completion, with technicians currently installing wiring for cameras and lighting. This infrastructure aims to enhance sustainable transport options in the area.

Minister Horne highlighted the project’s impact on local traffic, particularly for trucks. “Together with the truck bans, this will help take thousands of trucks off local roads,” she stated, underscoring the benefits for communities in the inner west.

Construction Challenges and Future Prospects

While the skyroad section is complete, construction on other parts of the West Gate Tunnel project has reportedly stalled due to a walkout by members of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) on Wednesday. The union has been contacted for comment regarding the situation.

The West Gate Tunnel is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in Melbourne, providing much-needed relief for local residents who have dealt with the challenges of construction for several years. With the promise of toll-free travel in January, many are eager to experience the benefits of the new infrastructure firsthand.
