sucker-punch-studios-sticks-to-one-game-at-a-time-approach

Sucker Punch Productions will continue its commitment to focusing on one project at a time, according to co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming. In a recent interview with VGC, Fleming emphasized the studio’s philosophy, stating, “we really can only do one thing at a time.” This approach remains unchanged following the release of the highly anticipated game, Ghost of Yotei.

Fleming explained that regardless of the next project—be it a continuation of Ghost of Yotei or a revival of beloved franchises like Sly Cooper or InFamous—the studio’s focus on a single project is essential. He elaborated, “If we were good at juggling four projects, yeah, we’d have a remaster, and let’s go do one of those, and one of those, and do some fan request, that would be really popular… But we only get to do one thing.”

The decision-making process for Sucker Punch’s next game is methodical and strategically timed. Fleming noted that the studio typically produces a major title every five years, which requires careful consideration of its creative direction. “So it kind of has to be your best idea, right?” he said. The gravity of this choice is akin to selecting a college major, highlighting the importance of each project.

Looking ahead, Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Yotei: Legends will launch next year as a free cooperative multiplayer expansion. This addition mirrors the successful model established with the previous title, Ghost of Tsushima. Although speculation surrounds the possibility of new entries in the Sly Cooper or InFamous franchises, Fleming reiterated the studio’s commitment to focus, stating, “you only get to do one about every five years.”

Fleming’s analogy about choosing between prestigious institutions underscores the weight of each decision the studio faces. “You could go to Cambridge, but you could also go to UCLA. And you could also decide you’re going to go to the Peace Corps, but you can only do one of those in the next five years. Wow, that’s a really big decision. You’d better think carefully about it,” he remarked.

As Sucker Punch Productions continues to navigate its creative path, fans can anticipate a thoughtful and focused approach to their future releases. The studio’s commitment to quality over quantity remains a cornerstone of its identity, ensuring that each title is crafted with the attention it deserves.
