UPDATE: A significant $6.7 million upgrade at the iconic Trial Bay Gaol in Arakoon National Park has been completed just in time for the holiday season, driving an unprecedented surge in tourism to the region. The campground is already fully booked for Christmas, with only a few spots remaining through mid-February.

The investment includes $3 million specifically allocated for vital foreshore protection works aimed at preserving the area’s natural beauty and preventing erosion. This rapid development comes amid increasing pressures from high visitor numbers, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable tourism solutions.

“Trial Bay Gaol is a jewel of the Macleay Coast and a favorite for families and visitors from across NSW,” stated Shane Robinson, Area Manager of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. “These upgrades are a win for the community and local businesses ahead of summer, offering enhanced facilities like new picnic shelters and improved amenities.”

The foreshore improvements focus on safeguarding the beach and its coastal environment from storm damage and erosion, ensuring that both residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this pristine coastline. By reinforcing vulnerable shoreline sections and stabilizing sand dunes, the project promotes long-term ecological health while enhancing visitor safety.

“Investing in iconic destinations like Trial Bay Gaol supports regional communities and preserves our natural and cultural heritage for generations to come,” Mr. Robinson added.

Alongside the foreshore works, the broader campground upgrade features new picnic shelters, enhanced amenities, and improved access for walking and cycling. These developments are designed to respect the site’s heritage while providing modern conveniences for visitors.

Local resident Trudy Lonie, who recently visited, praised the upgrades. “National Parks have done a wonderful job. There are bigger carparks, footpaths all around, and steps leading down to the water – it really is beautiful,” she commented.

As tourism is critical for the mid north coast’s economy, these enhancements are expected to generate significant economic benefits. “These upgrades will help drive economic growth and create jobs,” Robinson noted, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing local tourism.

This upgrade is part of the Government’s $91 million investment in National Park visitor infrastructure for the 2025-26 period, reinforcing the Mid North Coast’s status as a premier tourism destination. National Parks already contribute $6.3 billion annually to the NSW economy, supporting thousands of jobs and attracting numerous overnight stays.

With modern facilities and protected foreshore, the Trial Bay Gaol upgrades are poised to attract longer stays, fresh visitor interest, and vital economic growth for local businesses in the wider Macleay Valley region. Don’t miss out on this exciting development as it unfolds!
