UPDATE: Abel Walatee is finding his footing at Sydney FC, thanks to the support of fellow Liberian player Al Hassan Toure. As Walatee adjusts to life after Western United’s financial troubles, Toure’s presence has been crucial in making the transition smoother.

After Western United was placed in “conditional hibernation” for the 2025-26 A-League season, the young winger faced a challenging move to Sydney. Despite the upheaval, Walatee, just 21 years old, was determined to join his preferred club. Leaving his family in Melbourne was daunting, but Toure’s guidance helped ease his worries.

“We share a special bond,” said Walatee. “Coming from the same background made it easier to connect.” Toure, who arrived in Australia as a refugee too, embraced his role as a mentor. “I try to inspire Abel on and off the pitch,” Toure explained, highlighting their shared experiences as Liberian nationals.

With both players being the same age, the connection deepens. Toure, now 25, sees Walatee as a younger brother. “There’s always that Liberian bond,” he noted. “It’s important to help youngsters navigate this journey.”

In a further boost, Walatee welcomed the recent signing of former captain Ben Garuccio from Western United. “With Benny here, I have someone else to look up to,” he expressed. Garuccio, who missed Sydney’s opening-round 2-1 loss to Adelaide United, is expected to return for the match against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night at Leichhardt Oval.

“I think he’ll be available for selection this week,” Walatee confirmed. “It’s going to be a tough game and a very good challenge for us.” The duo’s collective experience will be pivotal as Sydney FC aims to bounce back from their earlier defeat.

This developing story highlights the importance of community and support among players from similar backgrounds, showcasing the human element in professional sports. As Sydney FC looks to strengthen its lineup, the bond between Toure and Walatee could be key in their pursuit of success this season.
