UPDATE: Allan ‘Ike’ Fraser is poised to celebrate a remarkable milestone this Wednesday, July 30, as he turns 100 years old. The Tallangatta resident has become a local legend, known for his unwavering spirit and dedication to family.

Every Tuesday evening, Fraser maintains a cherished ritual by visiting his son, Richard Fraser, who lives in the same town. This routine is a testament to his vitality at an age when many are confined to their homes. “Dad comes to visit the wife and I, every Tuesday night without fail,” Richard shared. “He just waltzes into the house and the greeting is always the same, ‘I’m still here.'”

Fraser’s centennial celebration is significant in a country where, as of 2024, only 6,000 Australians are aged 100 or older, representing a mere 0.023 percent of the population. His life story is filled with achievements, including being a key player for the Tallangatta Football Club, where he was part of the premiership-winning team at just 20 years old in 1945.

The Tallangatta Football Club plans a surprise celebration at their clubrooms on Sunday, honoring Allan’s incredible journey. “Dad doesn’t know about the party yet and says he doesn’t want anyone to make a fuss about him turning 100,” Richard explained. Despite his humble nature, the Fraser family has received heartfelt letters for Allan, including one from The King and others from the Prime Minister and Governor-General.

Allan’s life has been rich with experiences. Following the passing of his wife, Betty Margaret Fraser, six years ago, he continues to live independently. His son noted that his father’s longevity defies conventional wisdom. “Dad has loved a beer all his life,” Richard remarked, emphasizing that Allan’s lifestyle choices have not adhered to strict health norms. “He hasn’t been into eating healthy foods and going for a jog every day,” he added, highlighting a life lived with joy rather than restraint.

In addition to his time at the football club, Allan’s diverse career includes working in retail and even serving in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was a dairy farmer, ran a local store that sold wine and spirits, and later managed the town’s bottle shop. His colorful history also includes a passion for gambling, where he demonstrated clever tactics to win games.

As the Fraser family prepares for the dual celebrations—an intimate family dinner on Wednesday and a larger gathering on Sunday—emotions run high. “We have got a few letters here for him that we will give him on Wednesday night,” Richard noted, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Allan’s incredible life journey and his vibrant spirit serve as an inspiration to many in the community. As he turns 100, the legacy of the Fraser name continues to thrive, marked by a deep connection to family, sport, and community.

As the celebrations approach, the Tallangatta community eagerly anticipates honoring Allan ‘Ike’ Fraser, a man who embodies resilience and joy. His story is not just about reaching a century but is a celebration of life, family, and enduring legacy.
