UPDATE: South Warrnambool’s star midfielder, Archie Stevens, has just signed a new contract with Carlton for the 2026 VFL season, setting his sights on a significant milestone of 50 games after playing 37 matches over the past four years. This announcement comes as Stevens prepares for an exciting new chapter in his football career, having relocated to the Northern Territory for the off-season.
Stevens, just 22 years old, is a two-time premiership player with the Roosters and made 10 appearances in the VFL this past season. His unique pre-season experience includes playing for premier league team PINT, where he has impressed by being named among the best players in five of eight games as the team sits at the top of the league standings.
“I’ve re-signed at Carlton, so I’m going again there and pumped,” Stevens stated in an interview with The Standard. His excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, as he acknowledges the milestone of 50 games is approaching. “It’s a nice feeling to be getting close,” he added.
Stevens’ time in the Northern Territory has been transformative. He has been actively involved with a local basketball association while adapting to the new environment, reflecting on how Carlton has been supportive during this transition.
In a significant change for the league, recent rule modifications mean Stevens will be eligible for Hampden League finals even if he plays a substantial number of VFL games. Previously, players were ineligible for finals after participating in 13 or more VFL matches, but now only three senior appearances for their home club are required to qualify. “It’s an amazing thing for not just us at South, but the league in general,” Stevens remarked, underscoring how this change encourages players to pursue opportunities in the VFL without jeopardizing their local club commitments.
The South Warrnambool Roosters, now under new coach Dan Nicholson, are determined to reclaim their spot in the grand final after narrowly missing out in the 2025 preliminary final. Stevens, who averaged 35.1 disposals in 2025 and recorded a staggering league-high of 62 disposals in a single game against Hamilton Kangaroos, is eager to contribute to the team’s goals in the upcoming season.
Reflecting on his past successes, he expressed, “Seeing how good it was being able to win a couple in a row… it makes you just want to get back there so much more.” As he gears up for the 2026 season, Stevens is committed to doing everything in his power to help the Roosters achieve their ambitions.
With the new coaching dynamic, Stevens is optimistic about the future. “I am very excited for Nicho’s fresh start,” he said, indicating his trust in the new leadership to guide the Roosters back to their winning ways.
As the 2026 VFL season approaches, fans and supporters of South Warrnambool will be closely watching Stevens and his journey toward that coveted 50-game milestone. The excitement is building, and all eyes are on this emerging talent as he aims to make history on the field.
