The Armidale Private Hospital has inaugurated a new chemotherapy centre aimed at enhancing local healthcare services. Officially opening its doors to patients on March 17, 2024, this facility marks a significant step in providing vital treatment options closer to home.
Mel Butler, the chief executive and director of clinical services at Armidale Private Hospital, expressed the importance of this opening for the community. “It takes the pressure off the public health system, and it also provides patients with another option to be able to have their treatment,” she stated. The centre is equipped with 30 beds and two operating theatres, initially set to accommodate 20 patients per month, with potential for expansion based on demand.
The chemotherapy centre will offer a range of adult oncology treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted supportive therapy. “We’ve got quite a few patients ready to start on March 17,” Butler noted, highlighting the eagerness within the community for these services. In its initial phase, the centre will operate one day a week, with plans to add additional days if patient demand increases.
The idea for the chemotherapy unit emerged during discussions last September, leading to collaboration with Ramsey Health Care. Butler remarked on the smooth yet intensive process from conception to launch, crediting the efforts of numerous individuals involved in bringing the project to fruition.
In a statement, Kay Endres, a councillor with the Armidale Regional Council, praised the new facility. “This is another source for oncology. The public hospital is under high demand, so it’s absolutely brilliant to see people come together very quickly and have this option now available,” she said.
The new chemotherapy centre also offers an added benefit of training and education for nursing staff. Butler explained, “Chemotherapy is highly specialised nursing, which requires a lot of training, and it’s quite intense.” The training process is expected to last between six to eight weeks, providing staff with essential skills and helping to retain talent within the hospital.
With the opening of this chemotherapy centre, the Armidale Private Hospital aims not only to improve patient care but also to strengthen the local healthcare workforce. This initiative underscores a commitment to enhancing health services, ensuring that residents have access to critical treatments without the burden of long-distance travel.
