According to the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services, increased humidity and improved containment lines have led to better fire behavior. On the opposite side of the country, residents in eastern parts of the Northern Territory and much of Queensland are bracing for severe flooding as thunderstorms and monsoonal rains are expected over the weekend. Several regions could see rainfall totals of up to 300 mm, particularly in northwest Queensland and along the north Tropical Coast.
With the holiday season approaching, Ms. Bradbury warns that the timing of these storms could impact travel plans, stating, “Many people will be travelling or holidaying, so this is definitely something to build into your plans.” Flash flooding risks are heightened, especially in remote areas of western Queensland where roads may become impassable.
Moreover, the extreme weather has already caused a partial crane collapse on the Gold Coast as winds exceeded 80 km/h. Local police declared a state of emergency in the vicinity; fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
