australian-avocado-production-surges-to-aud-794-million-in-2024-25

URGENT UPDATE: New figures from Avocados Australia reveal a significant surge in the avocado industry, reporting a gross value of production (GVP) of AUD$794 million for FY2024/25. Australian avocado growers produced 131,385 tonnes of avocados, marking a 22.34 percent increase in value compared to the previous year, despite a slight drop in volume.

Despite these promising numbers, export levels have taken a hit. In 2024/25, Australia exported only 14,235 tonnes—representing 10.83 percent of total production—down 35 percent from last year. This decline is largely attributed to a lighter crop this season, according to the latest “Facts at a Glance Report” released on 12 September 2025.

John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, emphasized the importance of this report in understanding current trends. He stated, “The value of production has increased, reflecting growth in domestic demand and export markets following recent years of heavy supply.” The report indicates that consumer preferences are evolving, with a growing appreciation for high-quality Australian avocados.

In particular, Queensland led production, yielding 76,501 tonnes, accounting for 58 percent of the total. Western Australia followed with 36,889 tonnes, representing 28 percent of the total volume.

While domestic consumption per person decreased from 4.94 kg in 2023/24 to 4.74 kg in 2024/25 due to limited supply, the outlook remains positive. Avocados Australia projects production to rise, with expectations of reaching around 170,000 tonnes annually within the next two years.

Tyas added, “Consumers want a positive eating experience, and when we deliver avocados of consistent quality, they are more likely to repeat purchase.” He reassured that Australian avocados are not only delicious but also safe and nutritious, supporting both local markets and international exports.

As the avocado industry gears up for future growth, the focus remains on increasing both domestic and export demand. Avocados Australia is committed to working closely with international partners to enhance the profile of Australian avocados globally.
