UPDATE: More than 150 Jewish community leaders from across Australia are set to converge in Sydney for the highly anticipated Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) Plenary conference this Sunday, September 14, 2023. This pivotal event will feature representatives from every state, as well as key partners including the Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) and various Zionist youth movements.

The theme for this year’s conference, “Zionism, Unbroken,” underscores a commitment to resilience and unity among the Australian Jewish community. Notable speakers include Minister for Health Mark Butler, Shadow Attorney-General Julian Leeser, and former Israeli Government Minister Yoaz Hendel. The ZFA president, Jeremy Leibler, will deliver a keynote address focusing on the challenges the Australian Jewish community has faced and the importance of solidarity with one another and with Israel.

Leibler stated, “The conference is not just about refusing grievances and choosing a Zionist purpose. It’s about turning that purpose into practice; interrogating and renewing Zionism together.” His words resonate deeply as the community grapples with its identity and mission in a changing world.

The agenda includes an innovative design lab led by esteemed presidential historian and Zionist activist, Professor Gil Troy. This session will aim to redefine Zionism’s mission for 2025 and beyond. Attendees can also expect a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by Lillian Kline, co-founder of Project A. The discussion will spotlight “Zionism in action” and will include voices such as Hendel, survivor of the Nova Festival Natalie Sanandaji, Elyse Schachna, president of Zionism Victoria, and AUJS advocacy co-ordinator Liat Granot.

ZFA CEO Alon Cassuto emphasized the significance of the Plenary conference, stating, “The ZFA is building an organization with its finger on the pulse of the community, and this conference is a vital platform for individuals and organizations dedicated to enhancing Jewish identity and strengthening ties with Israel.”

As the event approaches, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation. This gathering not only represents a commitment to advocacy and representation but also fosters a renewed sense of community among Jewish Australians. Attendees will leave with actionable commitments that aim to strengthen the pillars of their collective mission.
