URGENT UPDATE: The new Ballan Library and Community Hub, a significant $7.25 million investment, officially opened on September 6, 2023, attracting a large crowd during its unveiling ceremony. The community event featured magic tricks, music, and activities for children, drawing in numerous visitors eager to explore the new facility located at 127 Inglis Street, Ballan.
The facility boasts modern library services, including digital resources, study spaces, and dedicated areas for youth and children to foster literacy and learning. Additionally, it offers maternal and child health services, an art exhibition space, a visitor information center, and community meeting rooms. This multifaceted approach aims to meet the diverse needs of the Ballan community.
During the opening event, attendees witnessed the unveiling of a brass plaque and the naming of two animal statues in the outdoor area, following a popular online competition. The statues, named Wally the wombat (nicknamed Sir Digs-A-Lot) and Snoot the echidna (also known as Detective Spikes), have already become local attractions.
Funding for the project came from multiple sources: $5 million from the state government, $2.25 million from the Moorabool Council, and $250,000 from community contributions. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell expressed his excitement about the library’s impact, noting that visitor numbers exceeded expectations in its initial weeks before the official opening.
“It’s a wonderful asset for the people of Ballan and surrounds,” said Tatchell. “It was fantastic to celebrate the opening officially with a family-friendly, fun-filled event.”
Eureka MP Michaela Settle echoed these sentiments, calling the library a “landmark investment for our thriving Ballan community.” She emphasized the facility’s potential to make a significant difference in the lives of local residents. “I couldn’t be more excited to see it officially open and full of life,” Settle added. “This project is a testament to what can be achieved when government, council, and community work together for the future of Ballan.”
As the community embraces this new hub, the Ballan Library is poised to become a vital resource for education and engagement in the area. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to explore its offerings and participate in upcoming events.
