URGENT UPDATE: Barkly, a remarkable German Shepherd, is a finalist for the prestigious OZTOPDOG awards, celebrating the vital roles dogs play in our lives. Owner Caroline Johns from Sunbury has expressed her deep appreciation for Barkly, describing him as a “gentle giant” who has been crucial in her battle with anxiety and depression.

“Without Barkly, my life wouldn’t be complete,” Johns stated. This dynamic duo has been inseparable for over seven years, with Barkly serving as a trained service animal since he was just eight weeks old. His comforting presence has transformed Johns’ life, and he has also made a significant impact on others as he volunteers in primary schools and nursing homes.

Barkly’s gentle nature shines during therapy sessions, particularly with children, including those with autism. “When he’s not working, he’s a naughty puppy,” Johns shared, “but once he puts his jacket and lead on, he goes into work mode.” His ability to interact with kids, combined with his calm demeanor, makes him a standout in any setting.

Now in its fifth year, the OZTOPDOG awards recognize the incredible contributions pets make to our well-being, with this year’s theme being “Dogs at Work.” This theme emphasizes the essential role dogs play in reducing stress, anxiety, and isolation in various workplaces.

Voting is open now and will remain so until August 27, 2023. This is a chance for supporters to rally behind Barkly and celebrate the incredible work he does. With the growing awareness of how dogs can help in professional settings, Barkly’s nomination comes at a pivotal moment.
