bega-pony-club-celebrates-70-years-of-equestrian-excellence

UPDATE: The Bega Pony Club is marking a remarkable 70 years of cultivating equestrian champions, with its roots tracing back to December 5, 1955. This unique club, training under the iconic Bega bridge, has produced numerous elite riders, including Olympian Jamie Coman and world champion harness driver Boyd Exell.

The anniversary not only highlights the club’s legacy but also emphasizes its ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent in the Far South Coast region. Club life member Ms. Smith, who has dedicated 50 years to the club, described it as a “smorgasbord of equestrian events.” She noted, “It gives you a chance to try different things,” allowing budding riders to explore various disciplines such as showjumping, dressage, and polocrosse.

Ms. Smith’s journey began in the 1960s when she joined by chance after a friend invited her to a club in Dalgety. Her passion blossomed as she witnessed the transformative journey of young riders, evolving from tentative beginners to confident competitors. “The biggest enjoyment for me has been watching the little children… cantering around with a big smile on their faces,” she shared.

During her tenure, she earned accolades including Volunteer of the Year in 2010 and played pivotal roles in organizing various events, impacting countless young lives. Her dedication mirrors the club’s mission of instilling essential riding skills, encouraging participants to pursue their equestrian dreams.

Former member Jeff “Poss” Otton, now 87 years old, reminisced about the club’s inception, stating, “Pony Club was tremendous and was a hell of a breakthrough… All our family have gone through pony club.” His experience underscores the club’s vital role in shaping the local equestrian culture, ensuring younger generations have access to training and competition.

The Bega Pony Club’s first rally day took place on January 15, 1956, setting the stage for future triumphs. It was established to uplift the district’s riders, aligning them with modern equestrian trends. The original committee worked tirelessly to pave the way for what would become a significant institution for aspiring riders.

As the club looks to the future, its legacy continues to thrive. Current and former members, along with their families, remain deeply connected to its mission. The community spirit and shared experiences foster a supportive environment that inspires young equestrians to develop their skills and passion.

With its historic milestones and ongoing commitment to excellence, the Bega Pony Club stands as a beacon of opportunity for young riders. As the celebrations unfold, the community reflects on the profound impact this club has had, not just on individual riders, but on the equestrian landscape of Australia.
